How to Repair an Xbox Spinner
-
1
Place a CD in the Xbox. If there is no noise when the CD is placed in the drive, a defective laser is not the problem, and the problem is either a loose wire or a defective spinning unit. Skip down to step six if this is the case. If the disk placed in the system does spin, it might be that the laser is burnt out or that the laser lens needs to be cleaned.
-
2
Clean the CD then clean the laser reader. This will solve many potential problems. If the Xbox still cannot read CDs and the disk inside is spinning, the laser needs to be replaced.

3
Order the new laser for the Xbox. There are many web sites where replacement Xbox lasers can be ordered. Llama.com and Video Game Central sell Xbox replacement parts.
-
4
Open up the Xbox case and check the cables. If the cable to the spinning unit is loose, reattach the cable and test the unit again. If the CD starts to spin, the unit has been repaired. If the spinner or laser is defective, proceed to the next step.
-
5
If the laser is defective, remove the laser and replace it, otherwise proceed to the next step. The pliers maybe necessary during the process or removing the laser spinner or the laser itself. Be careful not to damage either item while taking them out. Place the new laser or spinner inside the unit.
-
6
Replace the spinning unit. The spinning has small screws and fits tightly inside the Xbox. Be extremely careful when replacing the spinner. Place the case back on the console once the spinner is replaced.
-
7
Put the cover back on the Xbox, and test the disk again. The disk should spin and the Xbox should be capable of reading it. Happy gaming!
