How to Remove .TMP Files

Temporary computer files, also known as .TMP files, are used by Windows operating systems users as a means to store recent information that they may be working on or were recently working on. .TMP files are also used to share information between operating systems. However .TMP files can lead to system performance issues if they remain on the system for long periods of time and consume large amounts of space. Luckily, removing .TMP files is a very simple process that even a computer novice can master.

Instructions

  1. Removing .TMP Files From Windows

    • 1

Click on your Windows "Start" button at the bottom-left corner of your screen.

    • 2

Find the "Search" icon that features a small magnifying glass and left-click on that icon. You will now see a search box in the new window that has opened.

    • 3

Click on the "All Files and Folders" option when asked where you want to search and a new box will appear with a search option.

    • 4

Type "*.TMP" (without the quotation marks) in the search box. This will search your computer for any files ending in .TMP.

    • 5

Highlight all of the .TMP files that appear by left-clicking on the "Edit" option at the top of your open search window and then left-clicking on "Select All."

    • 6

Right-click on any one of the files that are now highlighted and then left-click on "Delete." This process will delete all of the .TMP files from your computer. You can also simply right-click on one .TMP file without using "Select All" if you only want to delete a specific file.
