A stone fireplace is a cozy, beautiful compliment to any interior decor. You can build a stone fireplace that will last for decades in a weekend.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large stones of your choice
  • Painter's tape
  • Metal lath
  • Mortar
  • Trowel
  • Bucket or mortar pan
  • Nails
  • Masonry saw
  • Hammer
  • Grout
  • Damp cloth
  1. Step 1

Measure the desired dimensions of your fireplace against the wall and outline in painter's tape.

  2. Step 2

Measure the footprint of the fireplace on the floor and outline in painter's tape.

  3. Step 3

Cut the metal lath so it fits inside the shapes marked by painter's tape. Nail the metal lath to the wall.

  4. Step 4

    Remove the painter's tape.

  5. Step 5

If you want the stones against the wall or on the floor to sit flush, cut the stone with a masonry saw and set them aside.

  6. Step 6

Mix your mortar according to package directions. Using your trowel, apply mortar to stones and begin filling in the footprint of the fireplace so you have a base to build upon.

  7. Step 7

Keep stacking stones until the entire area is covered. You may need to use your hands to push mortar in between stones.

  8. Step 8

Wipe your fireplace structure with a damp cloth to remove any excess mortar.

  9. Step 9

If the metal lath is visible on the edges of the fireplace, cover with a layer of grout.

  10. Step 10

Allow mortar 48 hours to dry.
