Instructions

Remove the damaged shingles. You will need to take a pry bar and pry away the good shingles from the bad. Be gentle so that you do not damage the good shingles. You will probably have to move a shingle from side to side to completely remove it.

    • 2

Remove the nails. Once you have removed the shingles the original nails will still be in your roof. Remove them with your pry bar but be sure not to damage any remaining shingles. For nails that cannot be removed use a hammer to drive them into the roof.

    • 3

Prep the roof for the new shingles. Look to see if any rips or tears were left on the underlayer of paper on the roof. It is possible that some of the nails coming out left a rip or tear. Cover any rips or tears, as well as nailheads from nails left in the roof, with roofing cement. Apply the roofing cement with a caulk gun and a putty knife to smooth it out.

Install the first shingles. Start at the lowest point on the roof where you have removed shingles. If you are only replacing some shingles you can use the ones left on the roof as a guide to line up the replacement shingles. Attach the shingles with four roofing nails that are about 3/4 of an inch above the tabs on the shingle.

Attach the old shingles to the new ones. If you are just replacing a few shingles then use a small amount of roofing cement to seal the new shingles to the old ones where they meet. Be sure to lift the old shingle carefully so that you do not damage it.
