1
Turn off all water, electric and gas connections to your home. If you are installing a gas hot water tank, then you can leave the electricity on. If you are installing an electric hot water tank, you will be able to leave the gas on.
-
2
Carry or push your new hot water tank over to the location where you are going to install it. Use a dolly if it is too heavy. If you are installing a gas hot water tank, ideally, the location will allow the gas pipe to easily reach your hot water tank. If the tank is electric, make sure an electrical outlet is convenient.

3
Find the hot and cold water connectors in your home, as well as where these will connect to your new hot water tank. Depending on the types of pipes, it may be as simple as threading them together, or you may need to purchase an additional part that will serve as the connection point. Your new hot water tank instruction manual will provide this information. Ensure that these connections are tight.
-
4
Connect the pressure relief valve and relief line. These two components are very important, because they will allow your hot water tank to automatically dispense of any excess heat. The valve and line screw right onto the tank. Tighten with a wrench.
-
5
Connect either the gas or electric supply to your hot water tank, depending on the style. Tighten the connections with your wrench. Turn the water, gas and electricity back on in your home.
-
6
Open your hot water tank's inlet valve and it will immediately begin to fill with water. Ensure all of the recent connections are secure and leak free.
