How to Fix the Heat Sink Problem on an XBox 360
The Microsoft Xbox 360 console provides more options than simply playing video games, as you can also watch movies online, chat with friends and download extra content. Unfortunately the console has a tendency to overheat quickly if it is used for extended periods of time. There are several troubleshooting steps you can attempt on your own to fix any heat sink problems the console has before having to resort to mailing the entire system to Microsoft for repair.

1
Remove the Xbox 360 console from the interior of an enclosed entertainment center if it is currently located inside one. Set it an open location where there is more room for free air flow and less chance for the console to overheat.
-
2
Purchase an external cooling fan to reduce the amount of heat generated by the console's processor (see Resources below). Turn off the console completely and remove the power cable from the back of the machine.

3
Connect the male plug at the bottom of the external cooling fan into the female power port on the back of the console. Plug the console's power cable into the female port on the opposite side of the external cooling fan. Turn the console back on and insert a game disc. Play through the game for an extended period of time to see if any heat sink issues continue to occur.

Tips & Warnings
Microsoft will send you email updates to let you know when they receive your console and when it will be mailed back to you.
Do not open your XBOX 360 console and attempt to repair the heat sink on your own as it will void the warranty provided through Microsoft.
