How to Clean Pentair Pool Filters

Pentair makes three kinds of pool filters. They are sand, diatomaceous earth (D.E.) and cartridge filters. These all need to be cleaned on a regular basis, depending on how high the pressure gets in the pool. There will be a water pressure line near the pool pump. If it is up above the red line, then the filter needs cleaning. The filter helps remove dirt particles that accumulate in the swimming pool. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the pool pump off. Lift the lid of the Pentair pool filter. Unlock the latch on the top and side. Twist the top half off by turning it to the left and pulling up.

    • 2

Open the drain plug. This will be located on the bottom side of the filter. This will empty out the water sitting in the filter. If you have a sand filter, then do not do this step since the sand will run out through the drain plug.

    • 3

Get a hose and rinse the filter. You do not have to remove it from the container while doing this. Place the hose over the actual filter and spray it. Avoid spraying it with high pressure water and make sure to get inside the creases of the filter to remove all the dirt that may be there. Be especially careful if you have a cartridge filter since the coils can easily be ruined by a high pressure of water.

Use another method of cleaning the filter. Set the valve on the top of the Pentair filter to "Backwash." There are six selections that the valve can be placed on with backwash being one of them. This will release the water from the filter and allow you to be able to remove the sand, cartridge or D.E. filter.

Open the filter lid and remove the filter. Rinse it down with a hose and replace it once you have cleaned it out. Turn the pump of the pool filter back on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use caution when rinsing the filters. If you use too much pressure in rinsing, you could damage the coils to the filter. This is especially true for the Pentair cartridge filter.
