A charter statement is a document written on behalf of a team, such as a project management team or a quality improvement team. The charter statement concisely describes the mission and purpose of the team, with the intent to lead and encourage its members. While a charter statement should not be taken lightly, neither does it have to take a lot of time or effort. Brainstorm as a team and create the ideal charter statement.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Brainstorm with the team, creating an outline draft of the charter statement as you establish parts of the statement.

  2. Step 2

Decide the essential purpose of the team. It may be short term, such as a project, or more broad. The more concise, the better focused the team will be.

  3. Step 3

Define who or what will benefit from the team. List this next, including a short description of how it will gain.

  4. Step 4

Ascertain how success or compliance will be measured. If possible, use time frames and measurable goals.

  5. Step 5

Assemble the outline into a single paragraph. Keep the team's purpose between one and three sentences. For the who and how section, one sentence is ample. Finally, a sentence or two is sufficient for the team's goals.
