How to Update FTA Receivers With a Flash Drive
Modern FTA (free to air) receivers update code via USB flash drives. Gone are the days of having to disconnect the FTA receiver from the TV and satellite connections in order connect the FTA receiver to the computer via a serial cable. Today, there is no need to disconnect the FTA receiver from the TV and satellite thanks to the invention of FTA receiver updates via USB flash drive updates. Because satellite TV signals update constantly, it is necessary to update FTA receivers with a flash drive frequently for uninterrupted TV viewing over satellite.

Purchase a modern FTA receiver that has a USB slot for updating the flash ROM on the receiver. If the FTA receiver has a serial port instead of a USB slot, a flash drive cannot be used to update the FTA receiver

Download the FTA receiver update file from the internet. In many cases, the manufacturer will not have an FTA update file. Many FTA update files have legal issues, so they are not available except via private websites. Contact the seller of the FTA receiver if access to an updated FTA update is needed.

Copy the FTA update file to the flash drive. Remove the flash drive from the computer once the copy is done.

Connect the flash drive to the FTA receiver.

On the FTA receiver, select the option to update the FTA receiver via flash drive from the menu options.

Select the correct file on the flash drive for updating and then select the option to begin the update.

Once the update has been completed, the FTA receiver will reboot itself. After the FTA receiver boots up, it is ready for use to watch satellite TV again.

Tips & Warnings
It may be helpful to save backup copies of old FTA update files. If there are bugs with the current FTP update file, partial TV viewing may still be available by downgrading to a previous version with this same process.
Do not turn off the FTA receiver while it is writing the new update to its memory, otherwise the FTA receiver may become unusable
