How to Construct a Career Objective for a Resume

The objective section of a resume is very important, because it will often determine if an employer will continue reading the remainder of your resume or toss it instead. Since the objective section has such a major impact on your resume, it is important to know how to construct the objective for your resume.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what position you are applying for. Do not use a generalized objective. You want to make sure that you are job-specific in your objective.

    • 2

Jot down the position title you are looking to obtain and the qualifications, talents and skills you possess that will show the hiring manager that you can be an asset to her company.

    • 3

Turn the information you wrote down into a personalized objective statement, using phrases like, "I am seeking a position as a (specific job title)" or "Qualified (specific job title) devoted to (something the job requires)."

    • 4

Do not use long and wordy sentences when making your objective statement. Stay informative and straight to the point. Your objective statement should be no longer than two or three sentences.

    • 5

Add your resume objective to your resume on your computer, being sure to spell check, review it and correct any errors.

Tips & Warnings

  • When constructing your resume objective, use key words that are found in the job description of the job you are applying for.
