How to Clean Wedgewood Jasperware

Wedgewood Jasperware is made of hard-fired clay. As such, some claim that it is safe to wash in the top rack of a dishwasher, but the excess heat in many dishwashers may damage the Jasperware. Your Wedgewood will last longer, especially if it's antique, with hand washing. Even stubborn soot and ash stains should come right off the hard finish with a little elbow grease. Above all, avoid scouring cleaners like Comet or Ajax that might scratch the finish.

Things You'll Need

• Rags
• Liquid dishwashing soap
• Old toothbrush

Instructions

1. Wipe any loose debris off the Wedgewood Jasperware with a damp cloth.

2. Wash the Jasperware with a damp cloth soaked in a mixture of dishwashing liquid soap and water.

3. Squirt dishwashing liquid directly onto stubborn heavy soil, as you might have on a Wedgewood Jasperware ashtray.

4. Wipe the Jasperware clean. If there is any soil remaining, scrub at it with an old toothbrush dipped in soapy water, or apply more soap directly to the Jasperware before scrubbing.

5. Rinse the Jasperware and hand dry each piece.

Tips & Warnings

• If you absolutely must scour your Jasperware, mix a little baking soda with water until it forms a paste-like consistently. Apply this to the Jasperware and scrub the area gently with an old toothbrush.
