Gray hair is typically much more porous than non-gray hair. This means it absorbs color more easily, but color can also be washed out of it more easily. A special procedure needs to be followed to color gray roots on porous hair.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use a porosity control product before coloring your gray roots. This evens out the hair shafts so color will be absorbed more evenly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

  2. Step 2

Separate your hair into four quadrants by making parts from the top of the forehead to the back of the neck and from the crown of your head to down behind each ear. Hold each section with a clip.

  3. Step 3

Unclip one quadrant at a time and apply color only to the roots. Use the tip of the applicator bottle to move between hair shafts and distribute color evenly. There may be some short hairs from new growth around the hairline--make sure to color these. If your hair is thick, you may need a friend to help.

  4. Step 4

Process your hair for the length of time specified in the manufacturer's instructions, usually less than an hour. Comb color to ends of hair. Wait 5 minutes before rinsing and using a mild shampoo. Be sure to use a deep conditioner to help close the hair shaft and lock in the color.

  5. Step 5

Color gray roots temporarily by purchasing a temporary hair color that's applied with a soft-tipped applicator. It's typically used around the face and nape of the neck where gray roots first become noticeable. It washes out after shampooing and must be removed before applying permanent hair color.
