How to Make Snap-Together Buttons
-
1
Open your covered button kit. You will find that each snap-together button consists of two pieces. The outer part of the button is larger and hollow, while the inner piece has a slight curved edge but is predominantly flat. The kit also includes a small soft rubber mounting tool and a template for the fabric.
-
2
Cut your fabric using the template. If you do not have a template, make your circle about 3/4 inch larger in diameter than the finished button size. Apply a lightweight iron on interfacing for thinner or sheer fabrics.

-
3
Spray your fabric lightly with spray adhesive. This is especially helpful if you are attempting to carefully position part of the design on the button. Place the fabric into the rubber mount.
-
4
Insert the outer top of the snap-together button into the rubber mounting piece. Be sure that the fabric has remained even on all sides. Place the underside of the button over it and push into place using the remaining piece of the mounting tool. If you are using thick fabric, you may need a small craft hammer to complete this operation.
-
5
Remove your button and attach as needed to your garments or accessories. You can also opt to remove or alter the button shanks prior to using the snap-together covered button kit. Consider removing the shank with pliers to create a flat back for a thumbtack or magnet or wiring a ponytail holder directly to the back of the snap-together covered buttons before assembling.
