How to Wear a Gun Holster

Gun holsters are designed to allow an individual to carry a pistol or revolver comfortably and safely while walking, riding, or otherwise engaged in activity. Holsters are typically made of leather, canvas, or leather and are designed to fit the form and shape of a particular model or type of gun. Holsters are usually worn attached to a belt and hang down on the side of an individual's dominant hand. Holsters may also feature the ability to carry extra ammunition or clips for easy access by the user.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the correct holster to be used. Some things to consider are whether the holster should be left- or right-handed, the material from which it is made, how the gun is held in place and whether there is the possibility of carrying extra ammunition or clips.

    • 2

Attach the holster to a belt following the directions from the manufacturer. Typically, holsters are attached to a belt by means of a loop. However, some holsters have a large clip for attaching to pants and other equipment. There are even holsters designed to be worn over the shoulder and under a jacket or coat.

    • 3

Adjust the holster as needed so that it is convenient and comfortable. Depending on the model and type of holster, there may be different means of adjusting the placement on a belt, the distance it hangs down from a belt, the angle of the holster and other options. Make sure the holster is easily accessible and comfortable.

    • 4

Check the fit of the gun to be carried in the holster. Make sure the holster is designed to fit the specific gun to be carried. Also pay attention to how the gun rides in the holster in a variety of positions, including standing and sitting.

    • 5

Make sure all safety straps and methods of retaining the gun in the holster are in place, are in good condition, and are working. Straps and other restraints are designed to hold a gun intact in the holster and prevent it from accidentally falling or slipping out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take time when choosing a holster. There are many manufacturers producing a wide range of styles and designs. Holsters range from around $20 to well over $100.

  • Make sure the holster that is selected adequately fits and protects the gun to be carried. It is possible for damage to result from an improperly fitting holster.
