Displaying a small collection of belt buckles in a case protects them from being damaged. Building a table-top display case that holds 5 to 10 belt buckles is easy. All you need are carpentry tools, plywood, wood stain or paint, hardware and a pre-cut piece of glass.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2-inch high-quality smooth-finish plywood
  • Measuring tape
  • Circular saw
  • 1/4-inch plywood
  • Sander
  • Wood stain or paint
  • A pre-cut piece of glass
  • One-inch wood screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Glue
  • Cloth lining

Cutting The Pieces for The Display Case

  1. Step 1

Cut a 1-foot by 3-foot bottom piece from the 1/2-inch plywood with the circular saw.

  2. Step 2

Cut two 4-inch by 3-foot pieces from the 1/2-inch plywood for two of the sides for your case.

  3. Step 3

Cut two 4-inch by 11-inch pieces from the 1/2-inch plywood for the other two sides.

  4. Step 4

Cut two 3 3/4-inch by 2-foot-11-inch pieces from the 1/4-inch plywood for the inset to hold the glass over the belt buckles.

  5. Step 5

Sand any rough edges off all cut pieces. Apply wood stain or paint to them and allow to dry.

  6. Step 6

Get a piece of 1/4-inch glass cut to 10 7/8-inches by 34 7/8-inches at a local glass shop for the display window over the top of your case. Have all edges smoothed and finished.

  7. Assembling The Display Case

  8. Step 1

Use the four 1/2-inch-thick side pieces to construct the 1-foot by 3-foot outer frame. Place the 3-foot-long pieces parallel to each other one foot apart and insert an 11-inch-long piece between them on each side. Drive two screws through each end of the 3-foot pieces into the shorter pieces.

  9. Step 2

Align the bottom piece of the case over the frame and attach it. Drive a screw every three inches into the frame through the bottom all the way around.

  10. Step 3

Insert an inset piece on edge inside the case against each long side. Attach each inset piece by squeezing some wood glue between it and the side of the case and pressing them all together.

  11. Step 4

Cover the inside of your case with cloth. Cut a piece to fit, then spread glue over all surfaces inside the case and carefully attach the cloth. Allow to dry.

  12. Step 5

Set the piece of glass on the insets inside the case. The glass will be even with the top of the four sides.
