Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Volumizing shampoo and conditioner
  • Fluffy towel
  • Wide tooth comb
  • Volumizing tonic or mousse
  • Wave-defining gel or mousse
  • Thick curling iron
  1. Step 1

Get your hair cut in a layered style. This is essential to getting the flappy effect. The heavier your layers, the flappier your hair will appear.

  2. Step 2

Wash your hair with a shampoo and conditioner especially formulated to add volume to your tresses. After you have rinsed off the shampoo, apply the conditioner to the ends of your hair only in order to avoid weighing your roots down with any conditioner that does not get washed off during your final rinse.

  3. Step 3

Gather your hair into a fluffy towel and press or squeeze the excess water out. Do not rub the towel against your hair--this causes your locks to get frizzy once they dry. Remove snarls and tangles in your locks with a wide tooth comb to make styling more effortless.

  4. Step 4

Apply a volumizing tonic or volumizing mousse to the roots of your hair. If you have thick hair, apply the product slightly past the roots about midway through your hair shaft for an evident lift.

  5. Step 5

Hold the blow dryer at a distance of about six inches away as you point it towards your roots while lifting a fine section of hair at a time towards the ceiling. This is the part of the styling process that will give your layers the flappy look. Keep blow drying just your roots until they feel almost dry.

  6. Step 6

Scrunch and style the waves at the ends of your hair with your fingers if you have naturally wavy hair. Work a pinch of wave-defining mousse or gel into the ends of your hair to enhance the waves. On the other hand, if you have straight hair, take a curling iron with a 2-inch barrel and clamp down on the end of a section of hair, about 1/4 of an inch thick and 1 inch wide. Roll the curling iron upward so that the hair wraps itself around the barrel; roll only halfway up the hair shaft or stick solely to the ends. Release the hair after about five seconds. The thick curling iron will create loose waves. Continue curling the ends of your hair until you have gone over all of them.

  7. Step 7

Finger comb your hair when you are finished to allow the flappy waves to fall in place.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a ceramic or tourmaline curling iron to minimize hair damage. Stay away from metal or copper curling irons if you will be using thermal hairstyling tools regularly, as these will traumatize your hair the most.
