Installing accordion shutters onto your home's windows is a simple task that can help protect your home from weathering and add some extra visual appeal. The majority of accordion shutters you purchase come in just a few pieces, so assembly and installation is typically no problem at all. Accordion shutters can often be quite heavy, so it's a good idea to have someone around to help you move and attach any parts.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Accordion shutter kit
  • Level
  1. Step 1

Organize the various parts of your accordion shutters system. Normally, there should be four parts--a top, bottom, left stack and right stack. If the actual pieces are not labeled, the kit's enclosed manual should help you identify them.

  2. Step 2

Arrange the pieces so that the bottom is lying closest to the sill of the window where you will be installing the accordion shutters. The top should be facing away from the house.

  3. Step 3

Attach all four pieces together with the screws provided. When you are finished, it will essentially look just like a window frame.

  4. Step 4

Stand up the window frame, resting on the bottom with the right and left stacks fully opened. You should be able to see through the frame. Carry the frame over to the area where you will be mounting your accordion shutters.

  5. Step 5

Secure the first corner. You can pick either the top left or right corner, and screw it into the window frame the shutters will cover. Next, secure the opposite corner in the exact same way. Use your level to make sure your accordion shutters are lined up straight. Finally, secure the rest of the top by putting screws in any remaining holes.

  6. Step 6

Install the bottom of your accordion shutters the same way you did the top. Screw one of the corners first, then the opposite corner and then finish with any screws in the middle. The accordion shutters should slide easily opened and closed, and you will see a pin that can be used to lock the accordion shutters open or closed.

on 7/21/2009 I would like to install my own shutters, but who sells the materials? I can only find places that sell parts and installation.
