1
Chose a replacement window. Make sure you accurately measure your old window. Measure the outside of the window frame horizontally and vertically. Consider choosing tax-deductible Energy Star windows that will reduce your heating and cooling bill.
-
2
Remove the caulk and exterior trim. Cut the caulking around the outside edge of your window on the interior and exterior of your house. This will prevent the exterior trim and interior wall from getting ripped up when you pull the window out. Pull off the trim boards that surround the window on the outside of your house. Be careful not to damage the boards so you can reuse the trim.

Take out the old window. Pull out the nails in to the vinyl flange that holds the window in place. Use a pry bar to get under the first few nails, then pry the frame to loosen the rest of the nails. Pull the remaining nails out with a hammer.

Put in your new window. If you've measured correctly, the window should slide in place and sit snug. Place a level around the exterior and interior of the window to make sure it's level. Hammer 2-inch nails in the holes on the window's outer flange. Drive nails into every third hole to secure the window.

5
Reapply your trim boards to the window's exterior. Hammer the trim in place with 2-inch nails. Caulk all around the outer trim and interior opening. This will prevent water from getting under your siding and help lock in heat and air.

Tips & Warnings
Do not nail down the flange on the bottom of your window. This is called "hanging a window," and helps if your house shifts slightly.
