Add volume to wavy hair.
Add volume to wavy hair.

If you've stopped wearing your wavy hair down because you have no idea how to manage it, don't give up just yet. With only a few styling products and some time out of your day, you can step out of the house with big, voluminous waves. While even the basic technique for pumping up wavy hair may feel time-consuming to you in the beginning, it will become nothing more than routine with a little practice.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Volumizing shampoo and conditioner
  • Towel
  • Comb
  • Volumizing tonic
  • Blow dryer
  • Wave-defining mousse or gel
  1. Step 1

Shampoo and condition your hair with products especially formulated to add volume to your tresses. When you have rinsed off the shampoo, apply the conditioner only to the ends of your hair, so you don't weigh your roots down with any conditioner that may not be washed off during your final rinse.

  2. Step 2

Absorb excess water from your hair using a fluffy towel. Do not rub the towel against your hair, as this can cause your locks to become frizzy upon drying. Instead, gather your hair into the towel and press or squeeze out the water. Detangle your hair with a wide-tooth comb for effortless styling.

  3. Step 3

Apply a volumizing tonic to the roots of your hair. If your tresses are thick, apply the product slightly past the roots for big hair that is more evidently lifted.

  4. Step 4

Point the blow dryer--at a distance of about 6 inches away--toward your roots as you lift a fine section of hair at a time toward the ceiling. This gives your roots body and volume for big, wavy hair. Keep blow drying just your roots until they feel almost dry.

  5. Step 5

Finish by scrunching and styling the waves at the ends of your locks with your fingers. You may apply a minute amount of wave-defining mousse or gel on the ends of your hair, but don't work with more than a pinch of product, to avoid weighing down your wavy hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get a layered haircut for your wavy hair to appear even more voluminous.
  • Do not bend over when blow-drying your hair. This will give your style width, not height.
