A hijhab is the traditional headwear for Arab women. It's a complex headdress that has to be put on a certain way and pinned together in specific places to cover all aspects of the female head. The hijhab takes skill to learn how to wear it.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bonnet cap
  • 3 to 5 feet of fabric
  • 5 (2-inch) pins
  1. Step 1

Wrap the head with a bonnet cap, a hat similar to the one that Amish women wear. These can come in various colors to match the hijhab that's being worn. This is to ensure that all the hair is away from the face and around the ears.

  2. Step 2

Place the fabric over the head and corner it off around the forehead and ears. The fabric should be even on the edges. The bonnet cap should not show once you place the fabric on the head; if the edges are showing, it's not on correctly.

  3. Step 3

Secure the pins in place just above the ears to hold the fabric and secure it to the bonnet cap. The fabric will rest below the chin to not show anything below the jaw line. Carefully place the pins to avoid being pricked and scratched around the ears and jaw line.

  4. Step 4

Wrap the longer ends of the fabric around the neck once with a fold and tuck. This is so that it's loose enough to rest around the neck and shoulders. The longer ends should be loose and not too snug because the hijhab will be uncomfortable to wear when too tight.

  5. Step 5

Look in the mirror after putting on the hijhab and make sure that you have the fit that is comfortable for you. Comfort varies by individual, so find the fit that suits your comfort level.
