Mexican maracas are musical instruments traditionally made of dried gourds. The seeds inside the maracas produce a unique sound when they're shaken. Children and crafters often make maracas with paper mache and dry beans or rice. If you've made a pair of maracas, consider decorating them the way they're sold in Mexico.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Craft glue
  • Glitter (red, white, green)
  • Clear, glossy spray sealant
  1. Step 1

Paint images on your maracas. Consider traditional images like a cacti or simple flowers in vibrant colors, such as those seen on Mexican dresses.

  2. Step 2

Decorate your maracas with the colors of the Mexican flag. Paint bold, broad stripes in red, white and green around the circumference of the maracas.

  3. Step 3

Use the craft glue and glitter to accent your Mexican maracas. Use the glitter sparingly, and only as an accent. For instance, if you've drawn flowers, use the glitter to highlight the center of the flower. Allow the paint and glitter to dry completely.

  4. Step 4

Spray your maracas with clear, glossy sealant. This will keep the paint from chipping, and will increase the life of your Mexican maracas.
