How to Remove Rust Spots From Golf Shafts
If you're an avid golfer, or even an occasional golfer, you want your clubs to look their best when you're on the links. But sometimes, especially with older clubs, rust spots can appear on the shaft of your club. Rust spots are not only unsightly, but they could eventually weaken the club and require replacement much sooner than would otherwise be necessary. Fortunately, keeping your clubs looking their very best is within your means.
Things You'll Need
- Knife
- Lemon
- Teflon scrubber
- 2-liter bottle of cola
- Metal polish
- Polishing cloths
- Additional cotton cloths
Instructions

1
Wipe the shafts of your clubs with a damp cotton cloth to remove any dirt or old polish. Wipe with a dry cloth to dry the shaft.
-
2
Cut a real lemon in half and scrub all of the rusty areas with half a lemon. Rub the areas well and then leave the lemon juice on your clubs overnight. Use one-half lemon per club.
-
-
3
Rinse your clubs with plain water to remove the lemon, being careful not to get the grips of the clubs wet.
-
4
Fill a sink or bucket with two gallons of warm water and pour in the two liters of cola. Soak the heads of the clubs in the cola mixture. Wrap cotton towels soaked in the mixture around the shafts of your cubs and leave overnight. Do not get the soda mixture on the grips of your clubs.
-
5
Remove the soda-soaked towels from your clubs and rinse the clubs thoroughly in warm water, being careful not to get the grips wet. Scrub the shaft of your clubs with the Teflon scrubber until most, if not all, of the rust spots are gone. Dry the clubs thoroughly with a clean cotton cloth.
-
6
Apply metal polish to a cotton cloth and wipe it onto the shaft of your clubs, paying special attention to areas where rust is (or was). Allow the polish to dry for 20 minutes and then buff off with a clean, dry cotton cloth or towel. Your clubs should now look virtually as good as new.
