Botanical tiaras use your favorite blooms and greens, along with a few floral supplies, to create a keepsake your wedding attendants will treasure. Making your own botanical tiaras is a good opportunity to involve family and friends from both sides of the aisle. If you have anyone you wish to honor who does not fit any more traditional role, have that person help make these beautiful hair ornaments.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Green florist's wire
  • Green floral tape
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Unadorned silver tone or gold tone tiaras
  • Real flowers and greens
  1. Step 1

Cut excess leaves and thorns off each flower stem. According to professional floral designer, Kenju, "Anything that is on the stem below the flower will sap water from the blossom, therefore, the more foliage you remove, the more water the blossom will be able to take up." Cut each stem to a 3 or 4-inch length.

  2. Step 2

Wrap each stem with floral wire. For flowers with large heads and weak stems, pierce the flower head with wire, then fold the wire in half so that it is able to criss-cross down the stem. For lighter flowers, such as daisies, make a hook in the wire. Insert the hook into the center of the daisy, then wrap the wire around the stem to the end.

  3. Step 3

Start at the center front of the tiara, and lay out your flowers in an eye-pleasing order. Combine large and small blooms in rows, like beads on a string, or in clusters. Or, use a medium cluster of flowers with rows of smaller flowers sweeping toward the sides of the tiara. Try several different placements for your flowers before you begin wiring them to the tiara. There is no wrong way to arrange your flowers if it is the one that pleases you.

  4. Step 4

Wire the largest flowers into place first. Thread the stem through the tiara frame, then weave it toward one side. It is best to keep all the stems going in the same direction, as it will be easier to find any wire ends which need to be taped to prevent snagging or poking the wearer.

  5. Step 5

Fill the spaces in between the largest flowers with smaller flowers. Fill any remaining space with greenery until the tiara looks full. Do not add so much greenery that it overpowers the flowers or becomes too wide for the wearer's hair to show.

  6. Step 6

Tape any wire ends with several turns of floral tape to protect the wearer's head. Weave wire ends toward the outside of the tiara rather than toward the wearer. Try the tiara on for size at least a day before the wedding, so that there is time to make adjustments without rushing. Keep botanical tiaras refrigerated until an hour before the wedding.

Tips & Warnings
  • Prepare your tiaras about 72 hours before your ceremony. Ensure your tiara matches your jewelry: silver with silver, gold with gold. Acknowledge everyone who helps you make the tiaras in your wedding program.
