How to Latch Hook a Back Stitch

When you make your own latch hook project from scratch, you may find it much easier if you outline the objects. It is best to make a back stitch to form color borders and outlines. When you make a back stitch on a latch hook project, you actually sew it with a needle. It would be difficult to form the stitch with a latch hook tool. A large-eye needle will work best when you make a latch hook back stitch.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn
  • Large-eye needle
  1. Step 1
    Large Mesh Canvas
     
    Large Mesh Canvas

    Thread needle with yarn in the color needed for the section of the picture. Knot the end of the yarn.

  2. Step 2

    Insert needle into latch hook canvas at the top of the outline.

  3. Step 3
    Knot Under Canvas
     
    Knot Under Canvas

    Pull the yarn through until the knot catches at the back of the canvas. You will have a small line of one stitch on the top of the canvas.

  4. Step 4
     

    Come back to the hole where the previous stitch was started. Insert needle and push it down through the fabric.

  5. Step 5
     

    Pull the yarn all the way through to complete the back stitch.

  6. Step 6
     

    Insert needle through the bottom of the fabric. Bring yarn back up through at the next hole. Insert needle at the hole where the previous stitch was started.

  7. Step 7

    Continue the back stitch to the end of the outline. Continue with other colors on the project piece.

Tips & Warnings
  • The back stitch is the same one used in embroidery and sewing.
