Drain the Koi pond by using an electric pump. While it is draining, remove any vegetation or plants from the koi pond as the water level drops, along with any fish. Keep the fish in a large bucket full of the water from the draining Koi pond.

Examine the floor of the Koi pond once it is drained. Locate the cracks by inspecting the floors, sides and corners extremely carefully. You may have one large crack, or five small ones. It is most common to have one large crack from an earthquake or the ground settling.

Use the wire brush to get rid of any algae, plant life or other debris from in and around the Koi pond crack. This is to ensure that the the mortar or caulk fills the crack completely and solidifies.

Fill the crack with a thick line of the caulk, or else use the trowel to fill it with mortar. Fill it completely, and even let some settle on the top and around the crack. Let dry.

Use sandpaper to gently smooth down to the appearance of the caulk or mortar. This will also help make it level with the Koi pond bottom again.

If the cracks you find in the Koi pond are small, use a hammer edge or chisel to make the cracks a little larger so you can get a sufficient amount of caulk or mortar inside of it.
