How to Obtain a Digital Signature for Filing an Income Tax Return

It is now possible to file income tax returns without using any paper. This method of paperless filing replaces a paper signature with a digital one that uses a PIN (personal identification number). Using a digital signature is easy and does not require any calls or other inquiries to the IRS, and it eliminates the need to mail anything. It also functions as the proof of acceptance when your income tax return is filed.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the right tax form. You can only use a digital signature for income taxes that are filed using the 1040, 1040A, 1040-SS or 1040-EZ forms.

    • 2

Prepare your taxes, using either an electronic return originator (ERO) or tax preparation software, and select the "E-file" option.

    • 3

Choose a five-digit number, preferably one that is easy to remember. This can be any set of five numbers as long as it is not all zeroes. This number will function as your digital signature.

    • 4

Enter your number, for the first and only time, just before e-filing. Though the exact prompt will vary from tax program to tax program, at the very end of the e-filing process, you will be prompted to choose and enter your five-digit number. Enter it in the box and then hit "Submit." When your e-file is transmitted, this number will automatically become your digital signature for that year.

    • 5

Enter in last year's five-digit number (from your digital signature) if you have one to ensure the validity and authenticity of this year's digital signature.

    • 6

Enter your date of birth and your adjusted gross income from the previous year if you cannot remember your five-digit number from last year or you did not use a digital signature. Then you are ready to e-file your taxes.
