Making a turkey wingbone call is pretty much as it sounds: you're making a call out of the leg (or wing) bone of a turkey. Making a turkey wingbone call is rather easy to do and doesn't take much time. It's also much less expensive to make your own rather than buy one. The wingbone call you make may just be more efficient than one you could buy.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fresh turkey
  • Sand paper
  • Tapered file
  • Wire
  • Bleach
  • Pan
  • Glue
  1. Step 1

Take the bones out of the wing of a turkey. Clean the bones off. This is essential for cleanliness and for the wingbone call to work properly. You want to make sure excess feathers, skin and fat is all off the turkey wingbones.

  2. Step 2

Cut apart the bones with your file. Where each bone meets, slice them so you have three separate bones. Ensure that you can see inside the bone clearly by turning the bones to the side.

  3. Step 3

Push out excess bone marrow with your piece of wire. The wire should be thin enough to fit inside the bones. You want to get all of it out that you can, but it doesn't need to be squeaky clean. More marrow will come out in further cleaning, but it's better to get as much of it out as possible with the wire.

  4. Step 4

Boil the bones in your saucepan. Add a few tablespoons of bleach to help sanitize the bones and make the marrow softer. This will help you clean the marrow out more easily. The goal is to have as hollow of wingbones as possible. When you're done boiling, take the bones out and extract the rest of the marrow. If you find that you cannot get it all out, boil it longer and try again. Wait for the bones to dry.

  5. Step 5

Fit the bones inside one another. The humerus is the largest, so the ulna will fit inside it, followed by the radius. The bones, as you will see, grow smaller and smaller, so even if you don't know what bones are what, you can fit them together by size. Sand them down if you need to in order to obtain a perfect fit.

  6. Step 6

Glue the bones together once they fit snugly, so you can ensure they won't come apart. If you like, you can cover one end of the wingbone call with a cloth handkerchief, so you're not applying your mouth directly to the bone. You want to be able to blow directly into the widest end of the wingbone call.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you're gluing the bones together, make sure you don't block the airways of the bone. Otherwise, your call will not work properly.
