Step 1
Ask questions. The U.K. dealer may not recognize you as a non-citizen, and the other players may take for granted that you know the rules. For example, if the game is Texas Hold 'em, ask about U.K. adaptations.
-
Step 2
Check the legality. If you are in a pub, ask the landlord the limits on the stakes of the game specific to the jurisdiction; poker is not legal in all U.K. venues. If you don't know, ask before you take a seat at the table.
-
Step 3
Ante up. Have enough of the local currency to cover your bets. If you are short of pound notes, ask whether the players would consider payment in U.S. currency, at the current exchange rate, of course.
-
Step 4
Learn lingo variations. In the UK, "muck," refers to the discard pile or discarding one's hand. "Pass" means the same as "fold" in the U.S. Learn general British slang terms for money such as "quid," "bob," monkey," "pony," and "dosh."
