How to Make a Washer Lock Snare Trap
Whether it be for trapping or for pest control around the vegetable patch, snares are a cheap and time-effective way of catching animals. One effective version of the snare is the washer lock model, which involves a few basic tools and parts, most or all of which any decent work bench will already have.
Things You'll Need
- 3/8-inch metal washer
- Drill
- 2 vice grips
- Steel nuts
- Steel wire (20 gauge recommended, but most any type will do)
Instructions
-
- 1
-
2
Use the vice grips to bend the washer into a perpendicular "L" shape.
-
-
3
Thread a steel nut through a length of steel wire and use the vice grips to fasten it at one end by flattening it. This will serve as a stopper. The wire itself can be whatever length is needed for the snare. A beginner who doesn't have a feel for these things should keep it between 16 and 24 inches.
-
4
Thread the other end of the wire through the holes that you drilled into the washer during Step 1. Draw the wire through until the flattened nut stops you.
-
5
Thread the open end of the wire through a swivel, then draw the swivel back to the washer.
-
6
Make a 2 or 3 inch wide loop with the unstopped end of the wire and tie it off with another flattened nut.
-
7
Set the snare by anchoring or tying down the washer lock in an area frequented by your game animals or pests.
