Identify and gather all lithium ion batteries to be disposed. Lithium ion batteries are rechargeable batteries, and are typically used in cell phones, laptops, cordless power tools and digital cameras.

Locate a place that collects and recycles lithium ion batteries. To search online, go to www.call2recycle.com and enter your zip code ,or if you prefer to locate a place by phone, dial 1-877-2-RECYCLE to find the nearest retailer that collects lithium ion batteries.

Once you have chosen a retailer near you, call the place to which you plan to bring your lithium ion batteries. Make sure you confirm that they collect batteries at that location and anything else you might need to know before dropping off your batteries.

Place each individual battery inside a plastic bag. There should be one battery per plastic bag. You may do this step either at home before going to the drop off location, or at the actual place where plastic bags might be available. If you do not have plastic bags, the lithium ion batteries can be covered with electrical, duct or masking tape.

Bring the lithium ion batteries to be recycled at the collection site. Some retailers that will accept batteries are Target, RadioShack, Staples, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Sears, AT&T and Verizon Wireless.
