How to Become an Online Mentor
-
1
Create a profile for yourself. This should include your experience, expertise and areas of interest. Have this with you when looking for options online, as all programs will ask for this information.
-
2
Consider carefully how much time you are willing and/or able to commit. Remember that once you agree to mentoring, you are agreeing to the time requirements of that particular program.
-
-
3
Look online for mentoring programs. An excellent website to explore is Serviceleader.org. This has lists of opportunities along with information on what is involved in mentoring. Put online mentoring in any search engine and you will find similar websites.
-
4
Read carefully the description of the organization's idea of what comprises mentoring. You may want to be able to email someone once a week to encourage and check in with him, but the program you are applying to needs someone to be available three evenings a week. It is not always clear, so ask questions.
-
5
Fill out the mentor profile form online, using the information you gathered in Step 1. The organization that you are applying to will need to approve this before posting it for matching purposes.
-
6
Wait to be informed by the mentoring site when you have a match. Follow the program's instructions and begin.
