How to Start in Multi-Level Marketing
Multi-level marketing (MLM) companies provide an opportunity for almost anyone to start her own business. If you've decided you want to do so, you need to understand what is involved in getting started and how to do so successfully. Even choosing a company to sign up with can take time and effort, which is well worth it so that you find one that is a good fit for you based on both the company's success and sustainability, and your passions and business goals.

1
Select a company to join as a distributor; check out the company's history, leaders, mission and values. Find out the cost to become a distributor, and how the compensation plan works. Sample the product and be sure you are comfortable promoting it. Also determine what business methods are possible and the ones most distributors use: parties, online marketing, sampling, event booths, etc.
-
2
Sign up with a sponsor you are comfortable working with. It may be the person who introduced you to the company and has already helped you learn about the opportunity. If you found out about the business on your own, search for a local distributor whose values align with your own by viewing their web pages or attending business networking meetings.

3
Complete the requirements to become a distributor for the company. Your sponsor can help you understand and complete the process, which at a minimum will include reading and signing a distributor agreement form. You may be asked to pay an enrollment fee; these signup fees start at about $30. In many cases committing to a minimum initial or monthly purchase is also required to earn commissions.
-
4
Begin using the company's products or services so that you will be effective and authentic at sharing information about them and will have them available for sampling and events. If you are able to, purchase product in volume so that you get discounted pricing and always have enough on hand for business purposes in addition to your own consumption.
-
5
Utilize all the product and business training that your company and upline provide, including videos, live calls, recorded calls, online tutorials, written training guides, etc. Attend other distributors' events to observe their methods.
-
6
Create a business plan for yourself; your sponsor or upline may have templates you can use. Clarify which of the company's products (if there are more than one) you will focus on, what target market you want to attract and how you will reach potential customers and business builders. Establish timelines and goals for building your business in terms of both income and bringing on new distributors.
-
7
Start with small steps, such as scheduling one or two events or sampling once or twice a week. Taking on too much at once may leave you overwhelmed and frustrated at the lack of return on your efforts. By taking it one step at a time, you can celebrate small successes and continually improve your methods and approach.
-
8
Follow your business plan, track your progress and revise your plan as you proceed. Ask your upline for assistance meeting your goals and understanding how you can improve. Be open to helpful criticism, so you can learn what works well and what you may be doing wrong.

Tips & Warnings
In choosing an MLM company to join, look for one whose products or services excite you so much that you would tell everyone you know about them even if you would not earn money from their purchases.
Resist the temptation to get started in more than one MLM business at the same time. Wait until you have a solid business with one before adding another.
