Things You'll Need:
- Car to drive to thrift stores.
- Some knowledge of book value
- A few bucks to buy books
-
Step 1
Go to www.thriftshopper.net to find the thrift stores in your area. You can also try Goodwill and Salvation Army to see what thrift stores are available in your locale.
-
Step 2
After you have found out where your local thrift stores are, get in your car and drive to your first stop and start looking for the book shelves.
-
Step 3
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rebeccawhitney/2267855739/Once you find the book shelves, have a look at what they have. Ignore all mass market paperbacks, new fiction novels, microwave cookbooks and new self help books These are worth nothing.
-
Step 4
Once you have put out of your mind all the books you don't want, you now have to concentrate on the ones you do want. Start browsing the nonfiction books such as medical, science, technology, obscure titles, small niches, etc. These books are worth the most and worth looking at.
-
Step 5
Open up a few books and look at the copyright page. If it has more than 5 printings, forget it. It has saturated the market and is probably worth nothing. You are looking for books that you can tell have not been mass produced.
-
Step 6
Once you pick up a few books that you think may be worth something, take them home, look them up on Amazon and see if they are worth anything. If they are worth something to where you can make a few bucks, great! If not, wash, rinse and repeat. There are other thrift stores out there and if you didn't find anything at that one, start hitting up others.
-
Step 7
Do more research by Googling book scouting and find out how you can look up the Amazon prices on the fly while in the thrift store so that you don't have to take any risks.
