Tune guitar in standard E

Tuning the guitar is vital to making the guitar sound good. Here are some simple instructions that explain guitar tuning basics.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A guitar
  • A tuner (On;one or real)
  1. Step 1

First you (If your using a tuner) plug you guitar up to it. Strum the first string. When the little needle hits dead in the middle the string is in tune. If your using an online tuner listen to the first Note (open E) and try to match it as perfectly as you can. Being a beginner this can take some time to get the hang of.

  2. Step 2

After you have tuned the first string you know don't need a tuner for the rest, you simple tune the rest of the strings essentially off of open E. Here's how.

  3. Step 3

Place your first finger of your left hand just behind the fifth fret on the bottom E string. This Note is called A. Now hold your finger there, Now pick the fifth and six strings in turn, gently adjusting the fifth string tuning peg until the two notes are the same.

  4. Step 4

Place the first finger of your left hand just behind the fifth fret on the A string. This note is called D. Tune the 4th string (the D note)to that one.

  5. Step 5

Place the first finger of your left hand just behind the fifth fret on the D string. This is called a G note. Tune your G string to that note.

  6. Step 6

Place the first finger of your left hand just behind the forth fret (Notice that the B string is tuned at the forth fret, it is the only one that does this. The rest of the strings are tuned from the Fifth) and tune it to that.

  7. Step 7

Now for the last string. Place the first finger of your left hand just behind the fifth fret on the B string. That’s a E note. tune The E string to it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice this over and over eventually you will be able to tune by ear!
  • You might want to start off with an auto tuner the work in to this method.
  • Don't focus to hard, otherwise you'll get mad.
  • Remember playing the guitar is all about joy and your joy of learning it!
