How to Obtain A Boat Title In NJ

If you plan on purchasing a boat in NJ, you will need to obtain a title. Every boat measuring 12 foot or longer, must be titled at the NJ DMV (Division of Motor Vehicles). Read on for the requirements.

Instructions

1. 

   Go to your nearest NJ DMV agency. Your boat should be titled within 10 days of your purchase in order to avoid fines.

2. 

   In order to process the titling of the boat you must have the following information available at the agency. This is quite a list but not as hard as it may look.

   Your information:
   ~Name
   ~Date of Birth
   ~Social Security number
   ~Drivers license

   Boat information:
   ~Length of Boat
   ~Model and make of boat
   ~valid registration
   ~Notarized Certificate of Ownership
   ~Notarized statement of receipt from seller
   ~ Sales bill notarized
   ~Address & corp code of financing company
   ~ Explanation of how you intend to use the boat
   ~Type of fuel the boat requires
   ~Type of motor in the boat
   ~Kind of hull material
   ~hull ID number
   ~Certificate of Origin

3. 

   Once all of the information is recorded for your new boat, you will be ready to pay the fee. The current fee for a NJ Boat Title is between $20.00 - $40.00. This depends on whether its a standard title or financed.

Tips & Warnings

• If you have a small boat, like a canoe or a kayak, they are exempt from the title process.
