      Settled In

After you have decided where you would like settle down and make a new nest, it's time to update your records. It is the law to notify the DMV when you change your address. There is a time limit of a 10 day maximum limit of notification. You can report the change to the DMV by visiting their office, phone or by mail.

      Driver's License

It is recommended to write your new address on the back of your license until you receive a new one. It is not mandatory to apply for a new copy of your license, the DMV will change your address for their records for no fee. However, if you do wish to have your new address on your license there is a small fee. Every state is different in this matter, therefore search for your state's DMV website. You can do this by searching your state's abbreviation followed by the letters DMV in a search engine such as google. All DMV websites have a "Forms" section where you can find a change of address form. In New York state, the form is called MV-232. Your will be able to view and print these forms online.

      Change of Address Form

After you have found your state's DMV website you are faced with two decisions. You can either change your address by telephone or by mailing the forms in. If you do not have a problem with paying the fee for a stamp then mail them. I personally cannot stand an automated telephone operator so I chose to mail the forms. Fill out the appropriate sections in the change of address form and securely place it in an envelope and mail it out. In this step you will need your current license for the ID# and expiration date. This step is extremely painless compared to waiting in the line at the DMV.

      USPS website

Now to ensure your mail gets to the right place you will need to change your address through the United States Postal Service. You can also do this step online, but without mailing any forms. This step is generally the same for all states. Visit the USPS website. I have provided a direct link in the "Resources" section for your convenience. On the front page of USPS's website there is a section called "Would you like to..." I have provided a screen shot in case you cannot find it. Proceed through the user-friendly steps of changing your address. The Postal Office has made this easier than ever to change your address online. After completing all of the information needed, you will need to pay a small fee of $1.00 to ensure security. I was more than willing to pay the small fee to protect my identity and ensure security. After completing payment, you will receive a confirmation email stating you have successfully changed your address.
