How to Make a simple diaper cake

Diaper cakes -- non-edible centerpieces generally used for baby showers -- combine beauty, function and practicality. The cakes, made of newborn-sized diapers, can be decorated with baby clothing, supplies and toys. Cakes can range from simple to extravagant and can be matched to virtually any theme. A thematic, multi-tiered diaper cake will be an admired addition to the new baby's nursery.

Things You'll Need

• 59 cloth or disposable diapers
• 1-inch-wide ribbon
• 1/4-inch-wide ribbon
• 24 small rubber bands
• 3 large rubber bands
• Large bottle baby lotion
• 4-oz. baby bottle
• Cake platter
• Baby items, such as pacifier, toys, eating utensils, jars of baby food

Instructions

1. 

   Diapers cakes can be made from either cloth or disposable diapers.

   Create the first tier. Wrap a small rubber band around the center of each of 18 tightly rolled diapers. Place a large bottle of baby lotion in the center of a cake platter. Arrange six diapers around the bottle. Place a large rubber band around the ring of diapers. Construct a second ring by placing the remaining 12 diapers around the first ring. Tie a large rubber band around them. Tie a 1/4-inch-wide piece of ribbon around each of 18 tightly rolled diapers. Arrange these diapers around the second ring. Secure them with a 1-inch-wide piece of ribbon.

2. Create the second tier. Wrap small rubber bands around each of six diapers and place the diapers on top of the first tier in a circular shape. Secure them with a large rubber band. Wrap 12 diapers individually with 1/4-inch-wide ribbon and place them around the ring of six diapers. Secure the second tier with 1-inch-wide ribbon.

3. Create the third tier. Wrap 1/4-inch-wide ribbon around each of five diapers and place the diapers on top of the second tier, arranged around a 4-oz. baby bottle. Tie a piece of 1-inch-wide ribbon around the tier.

4. 

   Baby shoes are a great topper for a diaper cake.

   Customize by adding baby items. Place smaller items in the folds of the diapers and larger items wrapped in the 1-inch ribbon. Crown your cake with a large stuffed animal, a classic figurine or baby shoes.
