Stretch marks have been a major concern and complaint of pregnant women for a very long time. Like elastic, skin can get over stretched and lose its elasticity. While there's no guarantee of completely eliminating the chances of stretch marks while pregnant, there are certain steps that pregnant women can take in an effort to lessen the amount and severity of stretch marks.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

One of the best ways to try to avoid stretch marks (or lessen them) is to try to avoid rapid weight gain. While it's true that in a normal pregnancy a woman is expected to gain on average 20-25 pounds, the key is to put the weight on gradually. A sudden weight gain will increase the odds of stretch marks. In order to let the pregnancy weight gain add on gradually it's important to eat healthy and make time for pregnancy-safe exercise.

  2. Step 2

Make sure to drink plenty of water, at least eight glasses a day. Keeping the body hydrated helps maintain healthy skin and the much needed elasticity. Healthy, elastic skin can help lessen stretch marks. While pregnant, hormones can cause skin to become dry. Drinking water can also help alleviate the dry, itch skin.

  3. Step 3

The jury is still out as to whether the many different stretch mark creams and lotions on the market can really help prevent stretch marks. However, no harm can come from moisturizing the skin on a daily basis. Try to use creams or lotions that have Vitamin E or Vitamin C, cocoa butter, or shea butter.

  4. Step 4

Make sure to take prenatal vitamins. Along with the many benefits to the baby, these vitamins can also help keep the skin healthy and elastic.
