Use a Soil Tester to Test Garden Soil

Soil testers sold in hardware stores and garden supply stores are a great way to test your soil quickly and easily to determine the pH of the soil, as well as, the Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potash available in the soil. Soil tests are designed to be performed with a small sample of soil mixed with water. After adding the appropriate capsule to the mixture, the water changes color to indicate the soil makeup. Purchasing a inexpensive soil test kit to test your soil provides you with the information needed to amend the soil for optimum growth of fruits, vegetables and flowers.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Soil test kit
  • Plastic Food Storage Bag
  • Scoop
  • Rolling Pin/Kitchen Mallet
  1. Step 1

Select several areas in your garden for testing. Scoop a small sample of fresh soil at a depth of 3 inches from each area and place it a clean container. It is important that the scoop and the container are free of contaminants as this may alter the results. A new food storage bag is ideal. Seal the bag and use a rolling pin or kitchen mallet to break the soil up until it is fine and crumbly. Avoid handling the soil with your hands for best results.

  2. Step 2

Match the test tube cap to the color of the capsule. Add the recommended amount of soil and water to the jar. Add the contents of the soil test capsule and shake to mix thoroughly.

  3. Step 3

Allow the mixture to set for the recommended amount of time. Refer to the directions on the soil test kit for times. Generally, once the contents have settled and the solution has reached the final color it is time to determine the results.

  4. Step 4

Compare the color of the solution to the color chart included in the soil test kit. Write down the results and the date of the soil test. Even though you may think you will remember, it is easy to forget the exact results and the health of your garden depends on the results of your soil test.

  5. Step 5

Follow the instructions included in the soil testing kit to amend the soil to the proper proportions for healthy growth. You can purchase the needed amendments at your garden supply or hardware store. If you have questions ask the attendant for assistance.

  6. Step 6

Work any amendments into the soil. If you have time, it is best to wait several weeks before planting, but if time is of the essence you can plant as soon as the soil is workable. Retest the soil in the fall to determine if your efforts have been successful.

Tips & Warnings
  • Soil composition may vary from one area of the garden to another. For best results test soil samples from more than one area.
