Tape keeps the cut straight and makes clean-up easy!

Easily cut bangs, on yourself, or even on wriggly small children!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Seems easy, right? But factor in wavy hair, wiggly kids, and the natural way the hair gets pushed out of line by the scissors, and cutting bangs turns out to be a little trickier than you thought. Have no fear! Tape makes the job easy, and cleanup a breeze! Start with a kid whose bangs need trimmed, and comb the hair straight.

Place tape in a straight line so that the top edge of the tape sits just below the level you want to cut. Any kind of tape will work, but gift-wrap tape is an especially good choice because you can peel it back and reposition it until you get it just where you want it.

  3. Step 3
A straight cut in less than two minutes!

Carefully cut hair just above the top edge of the tape. Most of the hair should stick to the tape. For especially thick hair, you may want to place a second piece of tape to fine-tune everything. Comb out and you're done!

Tips & Warnings
  • Touching up previously-cut bangs is easiest--you can follow the hair pattern that's already been established.
  • When cutting bangs from hair that is all one length, comb down a thin strip of hair along the hairline. Cut and evaluate. You can always cut more later, but you don't want to cut too much at the start, because you can't go back!
  • Especially when working with wriggly children, beware of cutting anywhere close to their eyes! If you feel there's any possibility the scissors may come too close to your child's eyes, have another person hold them still while you cut, and make sure you're high enough on the forehead that the eyes are not an issue.
