Make Up Artist Dreams?
Make Up Artist Dreams?

Want the real scoop on how to become a makeup artist for MAC Cosmetics? A lot of people want to become a M.A.C. employee, most want to be makeup artists.

It won't be easy, and it won't be quick (unless you have already done most of it), but it will be professionally worth it in the end.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Beauty School NYC

GO TO BEAUTY SCHOOL TO BECOME A MAC MAKE-UP ARTIST.

The background training and guidance you receive at beauty schools are well worth the time, energy, and money it requires to get the training. Consider make-up artist schools paid apprenticeships that introduce you to the trade of being a make-up artist. It is hard to convince someone you are a make-up artist without the necessary training.

LEARN EVERYTHING YOU CAN ABOUT MAC MAKE-UP, SKIN TONES, BEAUTY, STYLE, AND BEAUTY STYLES

The images on the next two steps come from makeupandbeautyblog.com. They show the difference between two MAC inspired styles: the bridal style, and the club-inspired style. I will link this blog in the resources below for more information. She has a list of 18 different techniques you can use with MAC cosmetics products to get you started if you are new at this. You can attend MAC Studio Talk Make-up classes in your area for time to time. Be aware of where they are held and when upcoming events occur.

PRACTICE YOUR BEAUTY SCHOOL TECHNIQUES CONSTANTLY TO BUILD EXPERTISE

If you want to become a MAC make-up artist you need to be proficient, skilled, and creative in your beauty skills. This requires deliberate practice over time with different faces, hair styles, beauty styles, cosmetic products, and other variants. Offer to give your friends makeovers. If you build skill and reputation start charging.

  4. Step 4

CONSIDER SELLING MAC MAKE-UP AND COSMETICS PRODUCTS

One way to become extremely familiar with a make-up product is to sell it. Buy it wholesale in bulk, and sell it at or just below retail to your network of family and friends and advertise online. Go to the resource section below to see a link for wholesale mac products.

  5. Step 5
    Build a MAC Folio

BUILD YOUR PORTFOLIO TO BE A MAC MAKE-UP ARTIST

If you have gone to beauty school, practiced your craft, and become familiar with the product it is time to form a professional beauty portfolio to sell yourself. This is the beauty industry's version of a resume. Find gifted student photographers or pay professional photographers to follow you as you practice your MAC make-up artists skills on real people. You will need to gather a booklet of 9 x 12 photographs that are professional in quality and impress the viewer immediately. You will also need a videographer to shoot real-time footage of you as a make-up artist in action. Get a good one, first impressions come once.

  6. Step 6

WANT TO BE A MAC PRO ARTIST?

Fill out the MAC Pro Membership application. You will need to give professional documentation and copy your picture ID. Annual membership fee is $35 USD. Pull it all together and drop it off at a MAC store. If you want to mail it, here is the address:

    MAC Pro Membership
PO Box 435, 3219 Yonge Street
    Toronto, Ontario M4N 3S1

If you want to call about membership here are two numbers you can use: 1-905-940-2437 or dial 1-877-553-5536 .

Tips & Warnings
  • Love what you do, and do it with pride every time.
  • Speak with a MAC manager at a M.A.C. cosmetics store to inquire about submitting your portfolio.
  • Be aggressive (but not annoying) and contact MAC make-up artists and ask for advice.
  • Don't put all your make-up eggs into the MAC basket. Keep pursuing a make-up artist career while attempting to become a MAC make-up artist. You may discover a different line of work, or a different company fits you perfectly.
