Celebrate Mother's Day Long Distance

With Mother's Day upon us those of us who live at a distance from our mothers need to get creative in order to celebrate the woman who gave us life. It will take a little bit of work to really make her day special, but isn't she worth it?

      Buy Something She Will Appreciate
Most of us have a pretty good idea of what our mother's love. If you can afford it during this hard economic time, take the time to choose something you know she'll really treasure. It doesn't have to be expensive but you do need to put some thought into what she would appreciate. People drop hints all the time if we are really listening. Whether it's jewelry, spending a day in a spa, or going out to a favorite restaurant. Take the time to find that special item or call the spa or restaurant and find out how you can pay in advance for that special place. If all else fails, send her roses or a bouquet of her favorite flowers, a hanging basket or something she can plant in her garden.

      Make Her A Card
If you are artistic, consider making her a card. I have one friend who does collage cards that are simply beautiful. All you need are some magazines with colorful pictures and you can go to town in creating a work of art. She will really appreciate the time you took to make it and it will remain on her dresser or kitchen counter long after Mother's Day is over. If you procrastinated, you can always send an her e-mail card, but be sure to follow up with a really card anyway.

      Write Her A Poem
Nothing will pull on the heartstrings like a well crafted, thoughtful poem. You can either send it in the mail with your card or you can read it to her over the phone when you make your call. Either way she will great appreciate the time you spent creating it.

      Call Her
Before you do think hard about all the ways she's supported you throughout your life. Pull out some of the gems from different decades of your life and remind her just how much it meant to you when she showed up to your ballet recital, the play you were in no matter how small the part, your soccer game, or how she helped you prepare for and help you with your prom, wedding, and baby. If these things don't resonate for you I'm sure there are other times you can think of where it was good just knowing she was their to support you through the good times and bad.
