What do you get for a teacher to show how much you appreciated what she has done for your child during the school year? A good teacher's gift does not have to be expensive. If fact, it is probably best if it is not expensive. But it should show that your value what the teacher has done for you.

If you have time, you might want to have your child plant a seed (a flower, an herb, even a vegetable) in a pot, water it and let it grow for a month or two. Then the child can present it to the teacher with a note along the lines of this: "Thank you for helping me grow."

Several times, I have made a little note pad for a teacher. I've taken some small bit of my child's artwork and taped it to a sheet of white paper. Then I've had my child write in her handwriting at the top of the page, "A Note from Mrs. XX." Finally, we took the page to a print shop and had them make a bound pad of note paper (about 5 x 7). It cost only about $5 for a pad of 50 notes personalized with the teacher's name.

Baked goods are always fun. Who doesn't like to eat? Select your favorite muffin or bread recipe, and bake it in a small loaf pan. Tie a ribbon around it, and present it to the teacher along with a homemade card.

If the teacher likes the outdoors, you might want to select a nice plant from your garden, and give some of it to the teacher. We dug up some chocolate mint plants one year, planted them in a little pot, tied a ribbon around it, and gave it to my child's teacher. She loved it!

Whatever you give, don't forget the card. You might want to start with a blank card, or you can simply fold a white sheet of paper in quarters. Have the child draw an illustration on the front, and write a brief note inside. You can write your own note on a separate sheet of pater and tuck it inside. Make sure you tell the teacher how much you appreciate all she has done for your child that year. Include an anecdote or two about how your child has grown in some way. The teacher will love it!
