Memorial Day, originally named Decoration Day, is a day to remember those who have died serving the United States of America. There are many ways that Americans can observe Memorial Day, and displaying the flag is one of the traditional ways that people honor the service of the men and women of our country.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • American flag
  • POW/MIA flag
  • small flags
  1. Step 1

To observe Memorial Day properly, fly the American flag at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day. Half-staff is directly half way to the top of the flag pole. At noon, raise the flag and display it at the top of the flag pole.

  2. Step 2

Fly and display the POW/MIA flag. This flag honors Prisoners of War, and those that are Missing in Action.

  3. Step 3

Display flags on soldiers’ graves. Visit your local cemetery and look for the graves of soldiers. Place a small American flag and flowers on the soldiers’ graves to honor the service of our fallen heroes.

  4. Step 4

Bring a small American flag to wave at the Memorial Day parade. To properly honor the flag, remember to not ever set the flag down on the ground.

  5. Step 5

If you display a flag on Memorial Day, be sure to take it down at sunset and store it properly. American flags should only be flown at night when there is a light directed on them.
