Do you hire a commercial pool company to clean your pool filter? Why not save money by learning to do it yourself? Following are the steps to clean a filter at the beginning, during and at the end of season. These instructions refer to a diatomaceous pool filter as part of an in ground pool system.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Beginning of the season, - do an initial charging of the filter through the skimmer with pump running, using appropriate quantity of diatomaceous earth per cartridge size to coat the filter elements. This charge will be indicated on the pressure gauge mounted on the filter canister

  2. Step 2

During season, as needed, and at end of season, follow these steps for cleaning.

With pump off, turn the multi-port valve to the backwash position.
    .

  3. Step 3

Start pump and run pump for about thirty seconds. Then shut off pump. This flushes the diatomaceous cake from the filter elements.

  4. Step 4

Turn valve to rinse position. Turn pump on, purge pump head for thirty seconds, and turn off.

  5. Step 5

Turn multi-port valve to filter position and start pump. Run for thirty seconds and turn off pump

  6. Step 6

Repeat step 2,3,4,5 in sequence until the sight glass in the multi-port valve is clear. This indicates that the diatomaceous earth has been flushed from the filter grids.

  7. Step 7

End of season -repeat steps 2-5 to flush filter. With pump off, remove filter from canister and check for any diatomaceous earth residue. If residue remains, flush cartridge filter elements with water from a garden hose or take cartridge to a car wash. Filter is now ready for storage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cleaning in pool season - leave cartridge in canister.
  • Monitor cleanliness by pressure gauge-should have its lowest reading when clean.
  • Check filter elements for any damage/holes -replace elements as required.
