Step 1
Take and pass the CGEIT examination. The CGEIT exam contains 120 multiple choice questions, which you will have 4 hours to complete. The questions cover 6 areas; IT Governance Framework (25%), Strategic Alignment (15%), Value Delivery (15%), Risk Management (20%), Resource Management (13%), and Performance Measurement (12%).

Step 2
Agree to follow the ISACA Code of Professional Ethics. You will also need to agree to abide by the ISACA Code of Professional Ethics.

Step 3
Agree to comply with the CGEIT Continuing Education Policy. The continuing education polity was set forth to ensure all CGEIT credentialed professionals keep their skills and knowledge current. To fulfill this requirement, you will need to complete 20 hours each year and 120 hours every 3 years of continuing education.

Step 4
Provide evidence of required IT governance work experience. To ensure you have gained the experience needed for this certification, you will need to document 5 years of qualifying experience. Some of this experience requirement can be substituted by holding qualifying certifications, completing specific post graduate degrees, or being a full time college instructor teaching IT governance related subjects.
