These smileys can be used in any Messenger, or email program (or just for fun!). They are cute and very easy to make!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Photoshop 8 and onwards
  • Patience
  1. Step 1
    Don't forget, transparent background!

First, create a 15x15 document in Photoshop with parameters like in the image attached.

You can zoom closer for easier drawing.

Zoom 1000% on to the 15x15 document you created. The zoom should be located at the top of the program as shown in the image attached. If you cannot locate the zoom feature, simply hold CTRL and use the + and - keys to adjust the zoom.

  3. Step 3

Now, we will draw our smiley pixel by pixel for perfect precision. Select the Pencil Tool located on your "tools" toolbar. If the Tools toolbar is not present, select that it be shown by going to "Windows" at the top of your document, and selecting "tools". Open a new layer. Let's name it "smiley 1" for easy finding. First, we draw a single color border. Choose any color you wish, and begin drawing your smiley with the pencil tool. Use the image attached for reference.

  4. Step 4
    Choose a color slightly different!

Ok, now that we have the border for our smiley, it's time to shade the border. This is very easy to do; simply choose a color slightly different than the color of your border and draw in the pixels as shown in the image attached.

  5. Step 5

Open a new layer by going to "Layer" in the documents top file bar, and selecting "new". Now, choose the elliptical marquee tool from your tools toolbar. Use the tool to select the smiley pixels including the border. This will prevent the smiley from looking too square. Use the image attached as a reference.

  6. Step 6
Don't forget to color everything within the elliptical marquee selected area in!

Don't forget to color everything within the elliptical marquee selected area in!

Open a new layer by Now going to "Layer" in the documents top file bar, and selecting "new". We will now fill in our smiley. Make sure to use the same color you used to shade the smiley earlier. Make sure that your smiley is selected with the elliptical marquee, and make sure to cover the entire smiley. Use the image attached as a reference.

  7. Step 7

Now we will add a gradient for a shade effect. With our colored in layer selected, right click on your mouse and choose "Blending options" on the pop-up menu. Once open, choose gradient overlay. Experiment with different colors (that match your current colors). Here is an image for reference.

  8. Step 8
    Be creative!

The final step depends all on you! Use your imagination to create whatever smiley you'd like, but I've attached an image for reference.

  9. Step 9
