The letter M is a fun letter to explore with your preschooler. Lots of fun activities will help your child increase her recognition of the letter M. Spending a week working on the letter M will give your child the chance to become familiar with the letter.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Introduce the letter M to your preschooler first. This will allow your preschooler to get acquainted with the letter. Practice making the sound and talk about words that start with the letter M.

  2. Step 2

Make a mailbox out of a shoe box. Use junk mail or make your own mail with envelopes. Let your child pretend to be a mail carrier.

  3. Step 3

Play with magnets. Collect magnets of various sizes and strengths. Allow your child to try the magnets on different surfaces to see what happens. You can also make a homemade decorative magnet. Glue a magnet to the back of a piece of artwork from your child.

  4. Step 4

Make masks out of paper plates. Help your child cut out eye holes. Allow him to decorate it. Punch a hole in each side for a string to hold on the mask.

  5. Step 5

Make macaroni pictures. Give your child uncooked macaroni noodles to glue to a piece of paper. Buy different shapes or sizes for variety.

  6. Step 6

Bake muffins or monkey bread for snack time. See the resources section below for a monkey bread recipe.

  7. Step 7

Make a marble painting. Place a piece of paper in the bottom of a shoe box or other container. Place different colors of paint in separate containers. Drop a marble in the first color so it gets paint on it. Drop the marble in the shoe box on top of the paper. Roll the marble around by shaking the box. Repeat with the other colors.

  8. Step 8

Make an edible mouse out of a canned pear half. Place the pear on a plate with the rounded side up. The small end will be the head of the mouse. Use a carrot curl or piece of thin licorice for the mouses tail. Use cloves or chocolate chips as the eyes. Use a raisin for the mouse's nose. Use banana slices as the ears. Use a toothpick to hold the ears in place. Just be sure to remove them before your child eats her mouse!

  9. Step 9

Review the letter M and all of the activities you did. Have your child practice the sound made by the letter M. Talk about the different words that start with the letter M.
