How to file a complaint with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission, Bureau of Consumer Protection)

The Federal Trade Commission was created in 1914 to make sure businesses used fair trade practices. Currently, the FTC is composed of three bureaus, one if which is dedicated to consumer protection. The Bureau of Consumer Protection protects consumers from unfair, deceptive or fraudulent business practices.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Information on the business you are filing against
  1. Step 1

    If you feel like a company you are doing business is treating you unfairly, or has deceptive business practices, you have the right to file a complaint with the FTC.

  2. Step 2

    Go to the Federal Trade Commission's website, www.ftc.com and click on the Consumer Protection tab. This tab contains information about what the Bureau does as well as provide a lot of information regarding scams and various consumer related topics.

  3. Step 3

    To file a complaint, click on the "File a Complaint" tab. There is some information to read before filing a complaint. To continue with your complaint, click on the "Complaint Assistant" on the right side of the page.

  4. Step 4

    The Complaint Wizard will walk you though all the steps of filing the complaint. Add as much detail as necessary to make sure the information you provide is clear, and effectively pleads your case. When you are finished, you will be given a file number for your complaint.
