Frisbee dog training is not as difficult as many people think. A well trained frisbee dog is truly a sight to behold. The way they sail through the air with pure determination to catch that disc. It is great exercise for your beloved pet and yourself. This tutorial will show you how to start frisbee dog training your puppy.

Get a frisbee. There are frisbees specially made for dogs that are softer and easier on the dog's mouth. While you can use any disc, it is better for your puppy when you start frisbee dog training if you use one that is designed for pets.

  2. Step 2

Use it as a food or water dish. To initially get your puppy interested in the frisbee, start using it as a food or water dish for your pet. Let them get used to the disc and associate it with things they love. All dogs love to eat.

  3. Step 3

Play tug-o-war. Once your puppy is accustom to the frisbee, start playing little games of tug-o-war with him. You should be sure to always let your dog win the game. Reward him with lots of praise when he wins. This is an important step in frisbee dog training as it teaches your pet that the disc is fun.

  4. Step 4

Make it more interesting. Once your puppy is used to playing with the frisbee, start holding it out at arm level and encouraging him to jump up and grab it. If he grabs hold of it from your hand, let him have it. Reward your pet with lots of praise when he successfully jumps up and grabs the disc.

Toss it. Now start tossing the frisbee short distances. When your pet successfully grabs the disc before it hits the ground, shower him with love and praise. This way he learns that it makes you happy when he catches it in the air. As your dog progresses with his frisbee dog training, start throwing the disc further and higher.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some breeds are better suited for frisbee dog training than others.
  • Dogs with high energy and jumping skills are best suited for this type of activity.
  • Don't overdo it. Your dog loves to play, but if you notice soreness around your pet's mouth, take a break.

on 6/3/2009 But what if the puppy won't bring the frisbee back? My puppy just takes it and runs, then plays keep-away!

on 5/28/2009 What a fun way to use up my Lab's over abundant energy. Using the frisbee as a dog dish, never would have thought to do that! Thanks
